After a challenging project, we have now completed the top end overhaul of a 4L3 engine dating from 1934 on vessel “Emblem”, a 50 foot trawler yacht.
The engine has been sea water cooled since she was installed over 80 years ago, and was suffering from overheating due to sediment in the cylinder blocks and cylinder heads. However, after substantial time was spent carefully removing the corrosion and in some cases cast iron welding corroded areas before re-machining, we were able to restore all main castings from the engine, allowing us to rebuild using the original equipment, with new pistons and bored and honed liners.
A successful sea trial followed on a beautiful day in the Medway, UK up to Chatham Historic Dockyard – her home port.
She is now ready for the next 80 years service…
